Dr Vineet Kumar Gahalaut assumed the charge of the Director of Wadia Institute of Himalayan Geology on 23 January 2025. He is on deputation from CSIR-National Geophysical Research Institute (NGRI), Hyderabad, India, where he has been Chief Scientist since 1999. He also served as the Director of National Center for Seismology under the Ministry of Earth Science during 2015-2019. He is involved in seismological research in various tectonic domains of India, particularly the Himalayan region. He has established a large GPS station network across India for crustal deformation monitoring. He is a recipient of the Indian National Science Academy (INSA) Medal for Young Scientist, the CSIR Young Scientist Award, the Anni Talwani Memorial Prize and the M S Krishnan Award by the Indian Geophysical Union, and the Physical Research Laboratory (PRL) award. He is fellow of the Indian Academy of Sciences (FASc), Bangalore, Indian National Science Academy (FNA), Delhi, and National Academy of Sciences (FNASc), Allahabad.
