Director's Message
The Wadia Institute of Himalayan Geology (WIHG) carries forward the pioneering legacy of Prof. D. N. Wadia. Since its inception in 1968, the Institute has made significant contributions to basic research on the geological evolution, geodynamics, and seismogenesis of the Himalaya, as well as its climate–tectonic interactions, glaciers, river systems, biodiversity, and natural resources.
Today, WIHG’s advanced laboratories, field observatories, and interdisciplinary expertise address earthquakes, landslides, floods, and other geohazards; glaciology and hydrology; climate variability; and mineral, geothermal, and other georesources in the Himalayan region.
As the Himalaya faces growing challenges from climate change, natural hazards, rapid development, water security and resource demands, WIHG’s role is more vital than ever. The Institute remains committed to cutting-edge, interdisciplinary, and societally relevant research, translating scientific knowledge into solutions for a safer, sustainable, and more resilient Himalaya.
