Multiparameter Geophysical Observatory (MPGO) is India's first integrated attempt in the direction of studying earthquake precursor signals in the Himalaya. MPGO has been established at Kopaddhar (30.53 N, 78.74 S) Uttarakhand, India, immediate south of Main Central Thrust (MCT), a major tectonic boundary in the Himalaya.
The idea originated from the fact that there are perturbations in various geophysical parameters of subsurface during the strain build up phase of an earthquake. Measurement of these changes and their detailed studies will help to explore possible relationship between precursors and earthquake processes. With the development of high sensitive, state of the art technology in the field of geophysical measurements, it is possible to observe and measure these changes.
Monitoring several parameters at a place will not only help to assess the perturbations for precursory studies but also will generate a high quality database of earthquake precursory signals in Himalaya.
